reading and homework expectations

Posted Date: 08/13/26 (05:02 PM)

It seems now days, many people have opinions about homework. There are a couple of reasons why we encourage our students to complete their homework here at Houston.

1. The math homework that is sent home is not meant to take much time at all. Students have all week to complete it. These are all skills that have been taught previously, so it should just be easy practice for most students. It is also a great way for parents to see what their child is learning and how they can support their learning at home.

2. Students are expected to read 20 minutes a night or 60 minutes a week. Reading logs will be going home that we ask parents to sign. Hearing your child read out loud is very special and a great way to spend time with them. Students can read their library books or books from home for their reading logs.  Please see the graphic below to learn more about our AR reading program. 3. Students will not be penalized for not doing their homework, but students who do complete their homework each week will be rewarded. Homework is not just about practicing a skill, but building responsibility, and teaching kids that school and learning is their job and to take it seriously.

Thank you for partnering with us to make sure that your child receives the best education possible. We believe that all of our students are capable of achieving great things and with hard work and determination they can do amazing things as adults one day!
